West African ceremonial ladle from the Dan People known as 'wunkirmian' or 'wakemia' (spoon associated with feasts). These ladles are badges of prestige that acknowledge a woman for her invaluable generosity to her family and the entire community. Objects like these were created to serve as symbols of status and the bearer of spiritual powers.

The complex design and craftsmanship of these ladles are the mark of their relevance. They come in many forms and this contemporary one is dark brown hand-carved wood from a single block, with the image of a young female as the handle. It is presented upright on a black custom metal stand.
