Authentic traditional Hudoq mask from the Dayak peoples. Hudoqs take different forms and this one is a highly abstract anthropomorphic one representing the 13 crop destroying pests, including rats, boars, leopards, crows and assorted other creatures of the island. Masks like these appear in agricultural rites, and have the power to drive away evil spirits from the rice fields; thus ensuring a good harvest. This one is made of light wood, painted in striking orange-red and black pigments and would have been danced during the Erau Harvest Ceremony

The ears of the mask have horn-like projections that represent wild animal fangs and are worn historically by Dayak men. There are signs of age and use and wire is on the back so it is ready for display. Very unusual and hard-to-find piece that would make a stunning addition to any decor, whether Traditional, Boho or Mid-Century Modern.
