Kuba Peoples Wood Statue of King Mishé from Congo

During the first half of the 18th century, the Kuba King Mishé miShyááng máMbúl was celebrated throughout his kingdom for his generosity and for the great number of his loyal subjects. He was even the recipient of his own praise song. At the height of his reign in 1710, he commissioned an idealized portrait-statue called ndop, which are idealized and stylized depictions of deceased Kuba leaders. It is generally agreed that ndop figures are not exact representations of leaders, but are depictions of kingship.

This wooden carving is attributed to the African Kuba People of the Congo and is a representation of the 18th century Kuba King Mishé miShyááng máMbúl. This wooden male figure sits cross-legged on a black wooden base and there is a tall object which is an offering container in front of him. Also, bracelets, armbands and shoulder hoops are featured with the right hand resting on the right leg.

Condition: Very Good

Wear: Consistent with age. There is a vertical crack on the back side of the head and on the part of the leg. Also, part of the left hand holding a long weapon or club is missing. Please refer to pictures.
