Vintage Ethiopian Kambaata Headrest with Acrylic Base

Wooden, carved, styled Kambaata tribal headrest. Rich, darkened patina is found on the top of this headrest – and incised carving throughout, with an elliptical top on an open support and an oval base. Mounted on a new acrylic base. 

Headrests support the head by cradling it along the jawline, elevating it from the ground; thus, aligning the spine while protecting intricate hairstyles from dust or from being flattened. This reddish-brown headrest is carved from a single piece of wood. The rest area is smooth – while the base that supports it is covered with intricate carved designs.

Place of Origin: Kembata Tembaro Zone, Ethiopia 

Date of Manufacture: mid-20th Century
