Individuals or groups within the Yoruba Peoples seek answers to problems facing them through divination. This is a process that determines the will of the sacred realm and is led by a diviner or "babalawo" who is the master of "Ifa." During this process the divination tray "Opon Ifa" is covered in white powder, palm nuts are cast onto it, and the resulting pattern is interpreted. Stories from the Ifa are then interpreted given the social or spiritual problem at hand.
This piece has a face representing Eshu/Èsù, the messenger to the gods, carved on the upper center portion which would be facing the diviner. It has additional carvings on the border consisting of very simple geometric designs of lines and 'X' shapes. Accompanied by a lucite stand for additional display options; it would fit in with a range of décor styles from Boho... to Eclectic or Tribal.
