Currency has taken many forms throughout African history. This antique monetary piece and others like it were crafted out of various metals and took on different shapes and sizes. This 'stingray-shaped' hand-forged iron 'Hoe' currency was used by the Angas and Ngas peoples of Nigeria. They were used used as ceremonial and utilitarian currency for dowry payments; as well as symbolic jests of goodwill.
The object has an oxidized surface with light encrusting in tones of light to dark caramel color. Mounted on a custom stand it has the presence of a minimalist art object. Very decorative sculptural piece perfect for display in residential or commercial spaces from Wabi Sabi, Mid-Century, Organic Modern to Contemporary or Warm Minimalism.
