Khmer hand-carved gray sandstone Linga (Phallic Emblem of Shiva) with architectural base. In Hindu tradition, the worship of the linga is the embodiment of the Shiva and represents fertility and generative power. Since some Khmer kings identified themselves with Shiva, they placed a linga at the summit of their most important temples.
This contemporary example was created in two separate pieces, the linga and the base which is the emblem of the goddess Shakti. Both are from the same gray sandstone, one resting inside the other, and together they represent the masculine and feminine union. The sandstone overall is a light gray with medium gray undertones along with subtle specks of white and greenish-brown throughout.
This piece was created in conjunction with Artisans d' Angkor, a Cambodian organization originally created to revive traditional Khmer artisan skills while helping young rural people find work near their home village. Perfect in a variety of interior settings from Boho, Asian-Inspired, California Eclectic, Zen... to Industrial/Loft or Mid-Century.
