Netsuke carvings from Japan were originally carved to be simple fasteners on the cords of Inro boxes (the traditional case for holding small objects attached at the waist on the sash when wearing a kimono). These netsuke carvings have since evolved into displays of craftsmanship, art, and status.
This is a Chinese hand-carved piece of boxwood in the style of Netsuke. It is an amazingly intricate sculpture of a smiling fisherman who has just caught a fish and is now adding it to his basket/trap.
This signed, vintage piece would be great as a stand-alone work of art or in a grouped collection. It is perfect in a variety of interior settings from Traditional, Chinoiserie, Zen... to Boho or Mid-Century.
