West African ceremonial ladle from the Dan People known as 'wunkirmian' or 'wakemia' (spoon associated with feasts). They come in many forms and this one is intricately carved and stands vertically on the legs and lower body of a woman, and has a long, tapering bowl that substitutes for the upper body. These ladles symbolize prestige and acknowledge an individual woman for her generosity for hosting a celebration for many guests. The ladle is as used to toss rice in the air welcoming guests, not for service in the meal. This example features a new acrylic base and would be perfect to display on a counter or shelf in a study or a large kitchen.
