Baule-style hand-carved wooden heddle pulley from West Africa. This area is known for its rich tradition in weaving. This is a representation of a functional piece used on a narrow-band loom which would separate the threads and allow the shuttle to pass through. Pulleys like these were often embellished, thus allowing artists to also showcase their carving skills. These carvings are typically human or animal heads and have no sacred meaning.
This contemporary example has an anthropomorphic head and a long neck with scarifications. The crossbar and bobbin are intact and it has a custom acrylic base. Perfect in a study or office on a bookshelf or side table in a range of décor styles from Boho, California Eclectic or Mid-Century Modern to a Warm Minimalist or one having a Neutral Aesthetic. It would be suitable to stand alone or be part of a larger grouping. Create an instant collection with our other product listings.
