This reliquary figure is attributed to the Kota people of Gabon and were initially created to guard the remains of ancestors, which they believed could lend protection and good fortune to their descendants.
The metal materials are composed of copper and brass over wood. The short torso extends to angular legs shaped as a diamond with geometric designs. The head is oval which has side curved extensions with geometric designs on the bottom edge and small rectangular drop shapes. The face has a wide vertical brass inlay with a slender nose and round wood bulging eyes with pupils. There are also horizontal inlaid copper strips on the face. The top of the head has a large curved extension with inlaid brass and geometric designs on the bottom edge.
This impactful piece can stand alone and has a presence with its custom black metal stand. It would make an amazing addition to a collection of hand-carved art from around the world and be at home in a variety of interior environments from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary or California Eclectic.
