Baule Hand Carved Wooden Gong Beater from Ivory Coast/Côte d’Ivoire

Hand-carved gong beater (Lawle) from the Baule people. These pieces are typically carved with images of humans or animals along with geometric designs. Diviners (Komien) use them during special occasions and rituals by tapping them on a metal gong. They use this rhythmic beat to create a state of awareness to serve as mediums in these ceremonies. 

This piece is a finely carved contemporary example on a custom black wooden base in excellent vintage condition. Also, notice that at the rear, a small pad of woven cloth is attached to the striker’s hammering element.
