Peruvian retablos are pieces of folk art important to the indigenous people from Ayacucho in the highlands. They take the form of handpainted boxes portraying religious, historical, or everyday events.

This example depicts a bakery scene (panadería/pastelería) and is intricately detailed with several bakers (panaderas) along with all of the typical products produced: cookies (galletas), pretzels, doughnuts (picarones), loaves of bread (hogaza de pan) and chumbeque.

Peruvian artist Claudio Jimenez Quispe took great care with crafting the ceramic people and bakery objects along with their paint colors. He is an internationally renowned artist and comes from a family of retablo makers in Ayacucho. He now resides in Lima, his work has been exhibited internationally, and he has been featured at the folk art market at the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This object could be hung, but we would suggest displaying it safely on a shelf in a variety of spaces from the kitchen, to a great room or study.
