This is a fun, signed piece by artist Agustin Vasquez Aguilar from San Martín Tilcajete, a small town just outside of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Oaxacan carvings are made from Ocote wood, hand carved, meticulously sanded and then painted with brilliant colors and intricate designs. This example depicts Noah's Ark and is composed of Noah with a staff and a tree on the top deck; along with six animal heads protruding from the body of the ark. The animals include a lion, giraffe, cow, pig, rhinoceros and zebra. Colors used include pink, yellow, blue, red, green, black and white.
This one-of-a-kind piece would work well in interior settings from Southwestern and Folk Art... to Boho and Scandinavian.
