Hard-to-find set of two baskets from the Bambara peoples of Mali. They are woven from grass with stitched applications of cowry shell bands around the outer surface, strands of cord hanging along the lower rim, and a thin strip of leather also reinforcing the bottom rim.

Baskets like these are used in ritual dance performances for the Chiwara agricultural ceremonies. The upper portion of the baskets, when worn atop a dancers head, support a large antelope carving. They are created in pairs, both male and female, and danced to celebrate the harvest season.

Both come with new custom acrylic stands making them perfect for display in a commercial or residential setting. With their neutral/brown and rustic/organic appearance, both would be at home in a Rustic, Wabi-Sabi, Organic-Inspired or Coastal Modern Design setting.
