Striking geometric-patterned and glazed earthenware bowl made by the Shipibo-Conibo who live along the Ucayali River, a southern tributary of the Upper Amazon in Peru. Their process of creating each piece transforms the vessels’ clay paste into a high tensile-strength composite material, allowing ceramists to create thin, coil-built vessels.
This piece is a shallow bowl with a wide outer rim and a partial narrow inner rim. The interior of the bowl is a dark orange color with white spaced, geometric designs, and a triangular-shaped face. The exterior of the bowl is a cream color with straight narrow black and orange lines; along with both zigzag and askewed lines.
Hallucinogenic substances were consumed by the Shamans, resulting in complex designs given to the Shipibo-Conibo pottery maker. The designs are a preservation of pre-Columbian times and their culture traditions. The pottery's origins are so important to the Shipibo-Conibo people that legend says a god taught the first people how to make pottery.
The Shipibo are one of the few native groups in which the primary artists are women. This would be a great stand-alone piece for any interior setting from Southwestern, Eclectic... to California Casual or Coastal Modern. Combine it with our other offerings to build an indigenous pottery collection. Custom acrylic display stand included.
