Lovely Chinese gilded lacquer architectural fragment possibly from a temple or a palace. It depicts a walking lion surrounded by scrollwork relief carvings; as well as a traditional dagger in the  upper right corner. The lion is in full stride with a long flowing mane and tail with exceptional detail to face and body. It is covered in gilt with several areas of flaking and erosion appropriate for age and exposure. The dagger in upper right hand corner has elaborate handle and scroll work on sheath. In Chinese mythology, the lion is a symbol of strength and superiority, and the dagger is a symbol of strength and authority. The two elements found on the same architectural panel indicate this fragment most certainly came from a palace rather than a temple.

Superb example of Chinese architectural carving that would be perfect in a variety of interior settings from Maximalist, Traditional, Asian Inspired to Eclectic.
