Netsuke carvings from Japan were originally carved to be simple fasteners on the cords of Inro boxes (the traditional case for holding small objects attached at the waist on the sash when wearing a kimono). These netsuke carvings have since evolved into displays of craftsmanship, art, and status.
This is a Chinese hand-carved piece of boxwood in the style of Netsuke. It is an amazingly intricate sculpture of Rakan Kalika (Japanese) or Lohan Kalika (Chinese). This sculpture is a representation of a disciple of Buddha holding a hand scroll, dressed in elaborate robes, and riding an elephant. This disciple is one who has passed the different stages of the 'Noble Path.'
This signed, vintage piece would be great as a stand-alone work of art or in a grouped collection. It is perfect in a variety of interior settings from Traditional, Chinoiserie, Zen... to Mid-Century.
