Chinese Netsuke-Style Hand-Carved Boxwood Trio of Monkeys "See No Evil, Hear No Evil & Speak No Evil" - 3" H X 2.5" Diam.

Netsuke carvings from Japan were originally carved to be simple fasteners on the cords of Inro boxes (the traditional case for holding small objects attached at the waist on the sash when wearing a kimono). These netsuke carvings have since evolved into displays of craftsmanship, art, and status. 

This is a Chinese hand-carved piece of boxwood in the style of Netsuke, with three wise monkeys back-to-back-to-back embodying "See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil". According to the Buddhist proverb, it is about avoiding evil thoughts and deeds. Mizaru sees no evil and covers his eyes; Kikazaru hears no evil and covers his ears; lastly, Iwazaru speaks no evil and covers his mouth.

This signed, vintage piece would be great as a stand-alone work of art or in a grouped collection. It is perfect in a variety of interior settings from Traditional, Chinoiserie, Asian-Inspired... to Zen or Mid-Century.
