Antique bronze Buddha head with a classical serene expression, lidded downcast eyes, long slender nose, full lips, long pendant ears, and the coiffure represented by short ringlet curls of hair reflecting the artistic styles of the region and period in which this statue was created.
Instead of short ringlet curls of hair, others call out the myth of 108 snails when they accumulated on his bald head while meditating in a garden. So deep was his meditation that he never even realized the snails were there.
However you view this piece, it is a very fine example of bronze casting from Thailand mounted on newly refinished block of old teak wood. It can act as a singular work of art or be displayed with other similar items from our collection. Perfect in a variety of interior settings from Zen, Asian-Inspired, California Eclectic... to Coastal Modern or Mid-Century.
Place of Origin: Thailand/Siam
Date of Manufacture: 19th Century
Condition: Very Good
Wear: Consistent with age and use. Some dirt and mineral build up on the surface of the head. Left ear and protuberance on top of head (ushinisha) are missing. Please refer to pictures.
