This is a large, exceptional piece from Don Mamerto Sánchez Cárdenas (1942-2023). He was a noted artist from Peru who used high quality red and cream clay found in the central Peruvian highlands. Each of his pieces is unique being that he hand-modeled them. He utilized the same tools that his father and grandfather used to shape their work. Subject matter includes churches, animals, musicians and mythical creatures such as mermaids.
Mamerto's creativity led him to develop art pieces that are today icons of Quinua pottery. His work is included in the permanent collection at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Also, he was recognized as a Grand Master of Peruvian Craftsmanship in 2000 and, in 2014, the Ministry of Culture distinguished him as a Meritorious Personality of Culture.
This mermaid is in immaculate condition, impactful, free standing, and great for collectors. It was handmade in the 1980s-1990s, is constructed and painted with neutral colored natural pigments, and would complement a public or private collection. Display it in a variety of interior settings from Southwestern... to Boho or Coastal Modern.
