In the past, many of the Bontoc households had specific baskets for their different daily activities.  This example called the 'Tupil,' was mainly used to bring cooked rice to the field for a midday meal. For the basket's construction, bamboo is combined with heavy strips of bent wood which forms the rims of covers and feet and stitched with rattan lace bindings. In terms of the craftsmanship, this example is transitional - meaning the basket 'transitions' from a square to a circle. Both the lid and base of this piece exhibit these characteristics; the lid from the top down to the opening and the base from the bottom up to the opening.

A hard-to-find piece that is perfect for the collector. Build an authentic 'gallery quality' collection and look for other vintage Philippine baskets that we offer! Perfect in Japandi, Wabi Sabi, Coastal Modern or California Casual environments.
