Intricately woven backpack/shoulder bag made of bamboo and rattan. The unique shape, color variation and sheer craftsmanship shows the basket-maker’s skill and imagination that comes from this mountainous region.

This extremely hard to find one-of-a-kind piece would add interest as a wall hanging in a Coastal Modern, Japandi or Wabi Sabi setting, or be a striking addition as part of a basket or purse collection. Collected in the 1960s on location in the Philippines – and has been part of a designer’s collection.

Place of Origin: Bontoc, Luzon, Philippines

Date of Manufacture: 1950s-1960s

Condition: Very Good. Missing twine that would serve as latch to close top of piece.

Wear: Consistent with age and use. Please refer to pictures.

Dimensions: 16 in. H X 13 in. W X 9 in. D

Reference: Philippine Basketry - An Appreciation by Robert F. Lane (pg. 87 & 90). Similar items are featured in the permanent collection at The Met, the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures at University of Illinois.
