Carved wooden painted mask from the Abelam Peoples. They subsist primarily on a diet of yams, taro root and sweet potatoes and many aspects of life revolve around the growing of yams and associated ceremonies. This mask was created for the celebration of the yam harvest and is decorated with natural pigments of ochre, kaolin and clay substances in geometric motifs and represents the spirit of a revered ancestor. Wire was also added to the backside for hanging.

Very unusual and hard-to-find piece that would make a stunning addition to any public or private Tribal Mask Collection from Oceania. The muted earth tone colors would also complement a wide range of interiors from Mid-Century, California Coastal... to Organic-Inspired or Coastal Modern Design.
