Carved wooden mask from the Abelam Peoples. They subsist primarily on a diet of yams, taro root and sweet potatoes and many aspects of life revolve around the growing of yams and associated ceremonies.

This mask was created for the celebration of the yam harvest and is decorated with natural pigments of ochre, kaolin and clay substances in geometric motifs and represents the spirit of a revered ancestor. Wire was also added to the backside for hanging.

The muted earth tone colors would complement a wide range of interiors from Mid-Century Modern, California Coastal or Industrial environments. This would add interest as a stand alone sculptural object in a residential or commercial setting or could be part of a larger grouping when combined with our other pieces from our New Guinea Collection.
