Carved wooden shrine idol from the Baule Peoples. This male figure has a long torso with muscular legs that are slightly flexed. Also, his eyes are closed, hands resting on his abdomen, and has a tranquil meditative look to his face.
Figures such as these serve as links to the spirit world and work as a tool for a diviner to communicate important insights. They represent idealized male or female figures in their prime, which are considered by the 'Asye Usu' (Bush Spirit) as desirable forms to inhabit, and so are used to draw them out of their home and into the village.
This piece has an amazing patina, comes with a new acrylic base and is in excellent vintage condition considering age and wear. It would be suitable to stand alone or be part of a larger collection with other West African wooden carvings. Display in a study or office on a bookshelf or side table in any décor.
