Baule-style intricately hand-carved heddle pulley featuring a full figure carving from the Ivory Coast. They are known for their weaving and this is typical representation of a functional piece used on a narrow-band loom which would separate the threads and allow the shuttle to pass through. Pulleys like these were often embellished, thus allowing artists to also showcase their carving skills. These carvings are typically are of humans or animals and have no sacred meaning.
This contemporary example has the crossbar and bobbin intact and it is presented on an acrylic base. Perfect in a study or office on a bookshelf or side table in a range of décor styles from Boho, California Eclectic or Mid-Century Modern to a Warm Minimalist or one having a Neutral Aesthetic.
