Bioma figure of flat form with an elongated body, arms to the sides, legs apart, deep carved lines along center of body with white pigments (lime) and several areas of patterns carved with red pigments (red ochre and other native paints). The face is highly abstract with round eyes and bulbous nose, and the wood shows some wear and exposure to elements.
Bioma figures are found along the southeast coast of Papua New Guinea and are the embodiment of the “imunu” which are the powerful spirits who inhabit a particular region and are kept in village shrines throughout the region.
This piece is a genuine ritual work of art that has been museum mounted on a solid acrylic base. It is free-standing and would make for an impactful sculpture on a console table in a great room or entry or on an art stand in a hallway. The muted earth tone colors would also complement a wide range of interiors from Mid-Century, California Casual to Organic Inspired or Coastal Modern Design.
