Carved piece from the Dan peoples in a beautifully abstracted form of the sacred Bird Mask depicting Ge Gon, a mask which is a combination of both human and bird form (the hornbill). The hornbill is a sacred bird throughout West Africa and is thought to have a strong spiritual force, affecting everything from fertility to the weather. This example is carved from a single piece of wood, has a long protruding beak, and is lined with an animal hair beard along lower portion. The eyes are slits covered by large diamond shaped sheets of aluminum, the patina of the mask is a uniform dark brown, and it is mounted on a custom stand for display.
It is an exceptional work of vintage carving from the Ivory Coast that would be perfect in a wide range of interior environments from an entry to a great room or a study in a Mid-Century, Boho, Organic Inspired or Industrial/Loft setting.
