This is a vintage piece of pottery from the Tarahumara Peoples (also known as the Rarámuri). They are an indigenous people who live in the Sierra Madre Mountain range in Northern Mexico/El Norte.
This piece is a cooking/olla pot that is rounded with shoulders (one being larger than the other), and a flat bottom. The shoulders taper up to a slightly flared rim with a rounded edge. There was twined rope around the exterior neck of the pottery indicated by the uneven, rough texture. The piece has a terracotta/tan coloration with black fire marks which are also see on the interior due to its use.
Tarahumara pottery is utilitarian in design. The pottery is made of earthen clay in white, orange and brown and is very rustic. The pots are used for a variety of cooking purposes, and may be used to cook beans, boil corn with lime, to roast corn, and in the larger pots, for making the Tarahumara traditional beer.
Perfect as an accent piece in a range of décor styles from Wabi Sabi, California Casual, Organic Modern, Warm Minimalist, to Southwestern or Coastal Modern Design.
