Lovely Chinese gilded lacquer architectural fragment possibly from a temple or a palace. It depicts a crane surrounded by scrollwork relief carvings of clouds.
The piece is covered in gilt with several areas of flaking and erosion appropriate for age and exposure. In Chinese mythology, the crane is a symbol of longevity and auspiciousness and is regarded as one of the links between divinity and humanity in Taoism.
This architectural carving would be perfect in a variety of interior settings from Maximalist, Traditional... to Asian-Inspired or Eclectic.
