Beautifully carved, authentic dance mask from the Guro peoples of the Ivory Coast. The mask is in the form of Zamble, a mythical anthropomorphic creature fusing the forms of the antelope, leopard and a human. These influences create a mask which is danced for the well being of the tribe. This example has a gentle curve in profile with striped antlers, slit eyes with round reddish ovals, a long snout with geometric carvings, and an open mouth bearing sharp teeth. The backside is carved in the traditional style and shows some signs of wear and ritual use and with two large holes for the attachment of a hood, which covers the dancer.
This is a tribal and ritually used work of ethnographic art. It is very decorative with a custom black metal and lucite stand. A great piece for an African Art Collector and would complement a wide range of interior environments from an entry to a great room or study in a California Casual, Boho, Organic Inspired or Coastal Modern Design setting.
