Peruvian retablos are pieces of folk art important to the indigenous people from Ayacucho in the highlands. They take the form of handpainted boxes portraying religious, historical, or everyday events.
This example is titled 'Los Auclinos Habilón' depicting a festival with musicians and brightly colored masked dancers. All are intricately painted with expressive detail.
Peruvian artists Eleudora and Mabilon Jimenez Quispe took great care with crafting the ceramic people along with their paint colors. They are members from an internationally renowned family of retablo makers in Ayacucho.
This object could be hung, but we would suggest displaying it safely on a shelf in a variety of spaces from the bedroom, to a great room or study.
