Senofu-style hand-carved heddle pulley featuring two hornbills from the Ivory Coast. They are known for their weaving and this is typical of a functional piece used on a narrow-band loom which would separate the threads and allow the shuttle to pass through. Pulleys like these were often embellished, thus allowing artists to also showcase their carving skills. These carvings are typically human or animal heads and have no sacred meaning.
This piece is a contemporary example on a custom black wooden base, in excellent vintage condition and would be suitable to stand alone or be part of a larger collection. Perfect in a study or office on a bookshelf or side table in a range of décor styles from Boho, California Eclectic or Mid-Century Modern to a Warm Minimalist or one having a Neutral Aesthetic.
