El Diablito has different symbolism through Central America. In Mexico, it represents the overarching balance of life between heaven and hell, good and evil and the present and beyond. In other countries like Costa Rica there is a “Festival of the Little Devils,” a traditional Boruca indigenous celebration commemorating their resistance against Spanish colonizers in the 16th century. Instead of being a scary object, many believe that objects like these can banish negativity and invite positivity.
This is a brightly painted vintage 'Diablito' constructed out of paper mache. It is approximately 60+ years old, has been storage since it was originally collected in the 1960s, and would add interest to any Folk Art collection.
A new clear coat of lacquer was added to 'lock-in' the paint color from deterioration. It is a simple, hard-to-find vintage piece, and would make a fun accent in a range of décor styles from Southwestern, Boho or Folk Art. Although there is a wire loop from which one could display/suspend this piece; being that it is lightweight and self-supporting we would suggest letting it stand upright.
