This basket was made by women weavers from the Iraya Mangyans, one of 12 ancient nomadic tribes with a distinct culture who live at the north end of Mindoro Island in the hills surrounding 8,500-foot-high Mount Halcon.
Lokmoy, a naturally water-resistant vine that grows high in Mindoro’s rainforests and other vines form the shape of this basket. Weavers use both sides of nito, a climbing fern, to make the design and color.
This piece features a Zig Zag/Chevron pattern and can take months to create. Create your own collection - and please look for other Iraya baskets that we offer! Perfect in Organic, 1970s Revival, Coastal or Modern Farmhouse environments.
