Beautifully carved vintage wooden mask with two tall horns of the ‘Kpan Pre’ style. This mask from the Baule/Guro peoples features two angular horns at the top that curve towards the back with a calm, well-proportioned face. The lines around the edge of the hairstyle are carved in arched relief as are the eyebrows. There are scarification marks carved on each side of the mouth, as well as on the forehead. The eyes have heavy lids, the nose is slender and long, and the mouth is open.
Inspired by traditional masks, this piece was made in the style of ritual masks which were worn and danced with by the Baule and Guro people at large ceremonies in honor of the buffalo god 'Goli.' This example resembles ritual masks that belong to the ‘Kpan Pre’ style of the Goli dances depicting a young girl often with horns.
The patina varies from light to dark brown and is presented on a new custom acrylic stand. It is an exceptional work of vintage carving inspired by traditional styles from the Ivory Coast that would be perfect in a wide range of interior environments from an entry to a great room or a study in a Modern, Mid-Century, Boho, Organic Inspired or Coastal Modern Design setting.
