Vintage Guro-style Hornbill mask with fish. The Guro Peoples are primarily found in the Ivory Coast and masking traditions are celebrated to honor initiation and harvest festivals. Many masks in the Guro tradition are anthropomorphic - combining both the human and animal spirit worlds.
Their masks are distinguished by extreme refinement and this vintage piece exhibits an upper portion with a long necked hornbill with large crest holding a fish/frog in its mouth, oval face, horizontal eyes, long naturalistic nose, small mouth showing filed teeth, red lips and two tresses on the sides of the head. Expert craftsmanship and highly decorative example of a vintage non-ritual tribal mask. This level of quality is hard to come by as it is a delicate and detailed carving from a single piece of wood. Excellent sculptural focal point on a wall in either a residential, commercial or hospitality setting.
